Chart Talk and Meaningful Use Save a Patient's Life

Mark Pensis of Pensis Chiropractic in Clinitonville, WI decided to be an early implementer of Meaningful Use in June of 2011. From the beginning his office staff was very enthusiastic about working with Mighty Oak HIT and participating in the Meaningful Use incentive program. Shannon logged into our "Summer of Meaningful Use" web seminar series and made the extra effort to understand the meaning of Meaningful Use.
Two requirements of Meaningful Use software are the abilities to keep an up-to-date medication list and to have a real time drug-drug interaction check. While entering a patients medication list Shannon was presented with an alert.

DRUG-DRUG INTERACTION WARNING: These Medications are known to cause muscle deterioration

Presented with this information, Shannon researched the warning further. Confirming the warning from Chart Talk with a few web sites Shannon called the patient at home on Sunday. The patient was still taking both medications and Shannon told the patient about the warning.

The next day the patient brought the information to his doctor. The doctor looked up the problem and immediately took the patient off the medication.

This is a great example of what the driving spirit behind the Meaningful Use program. A patients health care is now being shared across many different specialties. Problems affecting millions of Americans such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and conflicting prescriptions are being brought to the attention of all health care providers. With more eyes watching out and making decisions based on the patients over all health picture less people are going to slip through the cracks.
We're very proud to have Shannon and Dr. Pensis as our clients. We applaud them for not just going through the motions but defining what it is to be a Meaningful User of the Chart Talk certified EHR.
